Janus of Santa Cruz was founded in 1976 by physician Dr. Robert G. O’Briant, who introduced a highly effective approach for treating alcoholism in a social model setting.
Today, that first modest facility has grown into one of the most respected, full-service substance use disorder (SUD) treatment centers in central California, serving over 2,500 clients and their families each year.
We offer a full scope of programs, including detoxification, residential treatment, perinatal treatment, medication assisted opioid treatment, outpatient programs, drinking driver programs, counseling services, and sober housing.

Residential Treatment
Janus offers two separate residential treatment programs for drug and alcohol rehabilitation: a
co-educational Adult Residential Program and a Perinatal Residential Program for women who are pregnant or parenting young children (up to age 5).

Intensive Outpatient Programs
With our Intensive Outpatient Programs, clients come to Janus for classes, group meetings and education, but can continue their careers and daily activities while receiving treatment.
Overdose Prevention
The Santa Cruz Overdose Prevention & Education program (SCOPE) at Janus provides overdose prevention kits and education to individuals and community organizations.
Continuum of Care
From residential treatment to sober living and supportive housing, Janus provides ongoing support to help individuals build a stable, healthy, substance-free life.
Sobering Center
Sobering Centers serve as an alternative destination for individuals who are acutely intoxicated due to alcohol or other substances who might otherwise be transported to an emergency department or jail.
