What are Sobering Centers?

Sobering Centers serve as an alternative destination for individuals who are acutely intoxicated due to alcohol or other substances who might otherwise be transported to an emergency department or jail. Sobering centers offer a safe, supportive and medically monitored environment where individuals can safely stabilize and recover from the immediate effects of intoxication. The typical Sobering Center stay can last up to 23 hours and 59 minutes. Sobering centers can also offer connections to other resources.

Who is eligible?

People 18 years or older
Are acutely intoxicated (have taken a mood-or mind altering substance in the last 24 hours
Are conscious and cooperative
Are nonviolent and compliant
Are free from medical distress
Meet medical and other intake criteria

Rule Out Criteria

Person not acutely intoxicated
History of hospitalization or seizure due to detox symptoms
Unconscious or unresponsive
Unable or unwilling to answer intake questions
Person not ambulatory (cane, walker and wheelchair are okay if client is self-sufficient)
Active suicidal or homicidal ideation or thoughts
Acute chest pain, shortness of breath or severe pain
Acute injury or wound needing medical care
Person exhibiting unsafe behavior
Person unwilling or unable to comply with facility rules and staff direction
