CEO Message

September 2026

As National Recovery Month comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on an extraordinary week for Janus and for me personally.

Last Saturday, hundreds of community members joined us for our 50th Anniversary Gala. Together, we celebrated five decades of helping individuals and families find hope, healing, and recovery. We honored our history, recognized the people who helped build Janus, and looked forward to the future.

One of the most powerful moments of the evening came when Janus alumna Sarah Lucas stood before a room full of supporters and shared her recovery journey. Sarah spoke about surviving unimaginable trauma, homelessness, addiction, domestic violence, losing custody of her child, and the difficult road back to recovery. She also spoke about something equally important: hope.

When Sarah arrived at Janus, she was facing challenges that seemed impossible to overcome. Today, she is sober, reunited with her daughter, rebuilding relationships with her family, attending college, and creating the future she once thought was out of reach. Her story is extraordinary, but it is not unique.

Every day at Janus, we witness stories of transformation. We see people who have been written off by others discover their own strength. We see families reunite. We see individuals find healing, stability, and purpose. We see recovery happen.

What made Sarah's story especially meaningful to me is that parts of it felt very familiar.

Just one week before our gala, I shared my own recovery story publicly for the first time in the cover story of Good Times. For many years, I kept that part of my life private. Like many people in recovery, I carried fears about stigma, judgment, and what others might think. But recovery has taught me that vulnerability creates connection.

The truth is that recovery did not simply save my life. It shaped the person, professional, leader, wife, mother, and CEO I am today. Recovery taught me resilience. It taught me humility. It taught me that healing is possible, even when it feels impossible. Most importantly, it taught me that none of us accomplishes recovery alone.

That is why Sarah's story resonated so deeply with everyone in the room. While every recovery journey is different, the common thread is that healing happens when people are met with compassion, support, accountability, and hope. For 50 years, Janus has been privileged to provide those things to our community.

As we celebrate National Recovery Month, I want to recognize every person who is walking their own recovery journey. Whether you have one day, one year, or decades of recovery, your story matters. If you are struggling today, please know that recovery is possible. If you are supporting a loved one, your encouragement matters more than you may ever realize.

And to those who support Janus through your generosity, advocacy, volunteerism, and partnership, thank you. Because of you, individuals like Sarah are able to find the support they need to transform their lives.

The theme of our gala was honoring the past while investing in the future. Sarah's story is a reminder of why that future matters.

Recovery changes lives.

I know because it changed Sarah's.

And I know because it changed mine.

With gratitude,

Amber Williams
