Trauma Informed Care
Addiction is a painful, devastating and traumatizing experience for all involved. More often than not, the individual who abuses substances is self-medicating, and seeking relief from deep pain. Often times, this pain is related to traumatic events in one’s life, leading to a variety of symptoms and unsafe coping tools, including substance use. Janus of Santa Cruz believes that understanding the impact of trauma on individual’s lives is crucial in the proper treatment of substance use disorders. Trauma Informed Care is a core principle of Janus’ framework and foundation.
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, a trauma informed approach is “A program, organization, or system that realizes the widespread impact of trauma and understands potential paths for healing; recognizes the signs and symptoms of trauma in staff, clients, and others involved with the system; and responds by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures, practices, and settings.” Janus participates in frequent training, consultation and evaluation to ensure that this trauma informed approach is practiced throughout all programs. Additionally, the Seeking Safety curriculum, an evidence based practice proven to treat substance use and trauma, is incorporated into all of our treatment programs.
Santa Cruz Overdose Prevention & Education Program
The Santa Cruz Overdose Prevention & Education program (SCOPE) provides overdose prevention kits and education to the community. Anyone who uses opiates or lives with or near anyone who uses opiates (especially IV heroin) is urged to obtain a kit. A $20.00 donation is requested but a kit will not be denied to anyone due to inability to pay. Call 866-526-8772 to learn more about SCOPE.
